Are We Missing An Event? CLICK HERE TO ADD TO OUR LIST

FIND AN EVENT IN YOUR STATE

Lung Cancer is a devastating disease. Funding to develop improved screening, treatments and cures has been and continues to be woefully inadequate. We need to work together to improve awareness which in turn will hopefully lead to more support for requests for state and federal funds.

The purpose of this site is to provide all Lung Cancer event listings in one place. There are many worthwhile non-profit lung cancer advocacy sites but none list ALL the organized activities and some only list their own events.

Please find an event in your area and lend it your support. If there is no event, start your own. All these events started with just a few people. Many event organizers will help you with information about how to start an event. Your event doesn't need to raise money - raising awareness and assembling a mailing list for lobbying your representatives is just as useful a goal. If a state is not linked above, it has no event at this time. It sure would be great to see a dozen or more awareness events in every single state.
  • Number of Deaths, Five-Year-Survival-Rate: Lung cancer will remain the #1 cancer killer this year, claiming over 150,000 American lives: three times as many men as prostate cancer, nearly twice as many women as breast cancer. More people will die from lung cancer this year than from breast, prostate, colon, leukemia, ovarian and cervical cancers - combined.

  • This deadly disease has taken the lives of over 2,500,000 Americans since 2000. Of this number, over one million of these people never smoked or had quit smoking, often decades ago. This simply cannot be viewed as a 'smoker's disease'. That is not to say that smoker's 'deserve' lung cancer. How did smokers become 'victims' while the tobacco companies continue to make billions in profits? There is no legally available additive drug like cigarettes. People are allowed to get hooked, told to quit and then allowed to die with few treatment options available.
If you want to read all the news about lung cancer research every week, subscribe to the email newsletter produced by the Caring Ambassadors Lung Cancer Program. There are a few such newsletters but none of them are nearly as informative and inmpressive as the emailer compiled by Cindy Langhorne, CAPS Program Director.

Lung Cancer Screenings: The Lung Cancer Alliance has compiled a helpful set of links to screening centers throughout the USA. The best chance for beating lung cancer comes from early detection...these screening programs are extremely worthwhile: List Of Screening Centers.

A final note about this list: I leave event information on the site long after many have occurred so new visitors can learn about past events in their locations that are often repeated annually. Please do make careful note of the year of the listing of interest.

Shine a Light on Lung Cancer events are hosted by health care facilities during the month of November as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month activities. These events bring together those living with lung cancer, their families and the health care teams at hospitals across the country. Shine a Light events are educational events for the lung cancer community in your area. The program typically consists of speakers from your faculty who can share updates on treatment options, clinical trials and support programs and lung cancer survivors and caregivers whose stories provide perspective and hope to those dealing with a lung cancer diagnosis. Many also include a question and answer period so attendees can ask your experts any questions they may not be able to ask at appointments. Shine a Light events are also intended to honor all of those who are living with lung cancer and those we have lost to the disease. There are flashlights provided and each event has a moment of remembrance. Flashlights are turned on and we literally shine a light on those touched by lung cancer. Many times there are honor walls or balloon launches as well. Please visit the SAL website for the gathering time and more details.

She became passionate about the LUNGevity organization, creating a team and raising money for another LUNGevity event. After she passed away in November 2011, Hannah and Brad were looking for a way to become more involved in the organization and realized that there were not yet any LUNGevity events in Iowa.

12th Annual New York Lung Cancer Symposium®
New York Marriott Marquis
1535 Broadway
New York City
2017-11-11

The 12th Annual New York Lung Cancer Symposium® is a 1-day educational and scientific meeting that will provide an update on state-of-the-art management of patients with lung cancer, as well as a focus on future therapies in development. The past decade in lung cancer research has yielded a wealth of therapeutic options for patients with lung cancer, as well as greater knowledge of the many different subtypes of this disease. In particular, agents targeting oncogenic drivers and immunotherapeutic approaches have transformed the management of patients with lung cancer in recent years. Furthermore, numerous investigational approaches are in late-phase evaluation, with the potential to change standards of care in 2016, and beyond. However, although these developments hold the promise to further improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer, they also raise challenges for busy clinicians to maintain state-of-the-art approaches in their practices.

OHIO

Breathe Deep Toledo
Swan Creek Preserve
4659 Airport Hwy
Toledo
2017-04-23

Breathe Deep Toledo is a grassroots 5K walk and fun run founded by the family of Ellen Adler, a never-smoker who was diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer and died of this awful disease only 15 months later. Like many of us, Ellen was surprised to discover that 60% of lung cancer patients either never smoked or had already quit. After diagnosis, Ellen entered into a clinical trial that extended her life and increased her ability to function while living with the disease. LUNGevity funds research into the development of treatments for lung cancer patients with genetic mutations, such as Ellen's immunotherapy trial, as well as services like their Clinical Trials Ambassadors program, which encourages patient participation in these critical studies. Ellen's family wants to motivate people in her hometown of Toledo to help fund LUNGevity's lifesaving research, education, and support so that others don't have to go through what she did. Help us improve the survivorship of lung cancer for all our families! The course is stroller, wheelchair, bicycle, and pet friendly.

Breathe Deep Newark
Rotary Park Pavilion
925 Sharon Valley Road
Newark
2017-05-13

Breathe Deep Newark was created in memory of Jean Mellars, mother of seven, who discovered she had lung cancer too late to do anything about it. One of her daughters became involved with LUNGevity Foundation in Chicago and brought the event to Newark not only to honor her mother's memory, but to raise awareness in the hope that others impacted by lung cancer (1 in 15 Americans!) have a better understanding of the facts, and to raise funds for research and early detection techniques.

Cleveland
2017-06-17

Before Cara McManus passed away at the age of 36, on April 24, 2015, she founded Breathe Deep Cleveland, a family 5K walk and fun run and bicycle event. Cara, who had been diagnosed with stage IV ALK+ non-small cell lung cancer just one year earlier, was an active cyclist and never-smoker. Carrying on the event in her memory in 2015 and 2016 was chairperson Harriet Bauer, who lost her mother, Lois, to lung cancer in 2009. While Cara's and Lois' outcomes were tragic, there is so much good news about lung cancer research. Matt Hinzay, a Cleveland resident, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2011 when he was just 24 years old. Because of new treatments available, including clinical trials, Matt is hopeful for his future. LUNGevity Foundation provides significant funding for emerging lung cancer therapies. Breathe Deep Cleveland contiues on for the third year in memory of Cara, Lois, and all those we have lost to lung cancer and in hope for all of those who are currently fighting. 100% of the proceeds of the event will go to LUNGevity Foundation for lung cancer research, education, and support. Help us improve survivorship of lung cancer for all of our families!

Breathe Deep Salt Lake City is a grassroots event in celebration of Jan Poulsen's tenth year of lung cancer survivorship. The Poulsen family had little information about lung cancer when Jan was diagnosed, so they turned to LUNGevity Foundation for answers and participated in another LUNGevity event, Breathe Deep Los Angeles. Now, they are excited to provide the Salt Lake City area with the same education and support they received from LUNGevity! Breathe Deep Salt Lake City, which will raise critically needed funds for lung cancer research, is a 5K walk in the gorgeous Sugarhouse Park. Join us for a morning of celebrating lung cancer survivors, honoring those currently fighting the lung cancer battle, and remembering those loved ones who have lost the battle.
